Doris Included in Ireland Squad While Joe McCarthy Left Out

Rugby squad selection news

Returning head coach the Ireland coach has named captain Doris in his Irish roster for the autumn matches, but Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.

Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, while full-back Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the Lions tour.

Dublin province forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities says new Munster duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".

Following playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their previous encounter, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said the coach, back to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a mostly experienced squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will again compete for the starting fly-half spot. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, as the two players poised to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming URC match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third fly-half chosen as the coach deciding not to calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a recall for Connacht's Blade, chosen to club-mate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.

Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Irish pack. The front rower has been in a couple of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games this season and featured in Ireland A's loss by the English in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a cap.

Southern province lock Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and veteran Ulster lock Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to cover for the captain should the captain does not regain full fitness in time to face the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will meet in Dublin on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
